Archon Group and Goldman Properties have proposed a 23 story, 290 residential unit high-rise on A Street in the Seaport / Fort Point District of Boston.
The developers are offering to donate a building in the neighborhood to provide housing for many of the artists that the new high-rise will displace. This is part of the requirement by the city of Boston which states that developers much provide 15% of the units as affordable. Development in the Seaport District has been somewhat strained in the past with some current residents and artists having a problem with their former lofts being converted to luxury residential or office space. This is the first proposal of its kind offering a building to be donated to the residents.
This block of A street is part of the neighborhood which a master plan has been drawn for with significant height being added. Many of the objections have also been that not enough parks and green space have been planned into the developments.
Even if this gets approved, we won’t see any contruction start for nearly 2 years which is when the current leases expire. I hope to see this become developed as envisioned as long as it fits in with its surroundings. I see so much potential in the Seaport / Fort Point neighborhoods and think that bringing in 200+ residential units is going to be a huge part of creating a true 24/7 neighborhood.
