It is the crunch of snow crystals on the paths of the city’s many parks, a time when those same pathways change from jogging trails to cross-country ski practice runs. But what really ushers in the winter season is the opening of the Boston Common Frog Pond to those who wish to strap on a pair of skates and glide across the ice.

Open for skating from roughly mid-November until mid to late March, the Frog Pond is on the north-eastern end of historic Boston Common. Home to the Skating Club of Boston, this is where young and old can learn to navigate around the ice in either group or private lessons, or in public free skates. New Years Eve at Frog Pond means skating, of course, along with fireworks and vendors selling hot chocolate, roasted chestnuts and other delectable tid-bits. Best of all, the pond, and all that winter fun, is within walking distance of some prime Boston real estate.

Even if you don’t feel like skating, take a walk through the woods to the onsite winter-only Frog Pond Café. Enjoy gourmet coffee and a selective menu as you dine outside under giant heated umbrellas. During the spring and fall months, Frog Pond becomes a reflecting pool, and in summer a refreshing spray pool accompanied by a children’s carousel. If a Boston relocation is in your future, this is a perfect place to get a feel for one of the city’s most cherished neighborhood open spaces.

Boston Commons is the city’s largest and oldest park and dates back to 1634. Having weathered the trying times of the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, the park is a cherished historic site. Today the tree-filled grounds and zigzagging pathways are surrounded by luxury condominiums and apartments, as well as name brand high-end hotels. The Five-Star Four Seasons Hotel Boston is on the western end of the park. To the east is the ultra modern 45 Province condo tower with its floor-to-ceiling windows and dynamic city and Charles River views. Another offering is 360 Newbury St., once called the Tower Records Building, specializing in Boston loft style condos in a prime Back Bay neighborhood locale.

Massachusetts General Hospital is to the northeast, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is a short drive across the Charles River and prestigious Northeastern University is to the west. Iconic Fenway Park, home of the Boston Redsocks Major League Baseball Team, is a little farther west near a large park called the Bay Back Fens, surrounded by many Fenway luxury condos. The Charles River Reservation IV is another public park fronting the river basin, offering more opportunities to bike, jog or just enjoy the timeless views. More luxury Boston condos and apartments may be found along the waterfront near and in the colorful Back Bay neighborhood, listed on the Registry of National Historic Places

Prudential Center sits right off Interstate 90, close to the Boston Back Bay train station. The Top of the Hub Restaurant offers an impressive skyline view and superb service from the top of the center’s Prudential Tower. This is the same building that hosts the Skywalk Observatory, famed for its 360 degree view of the Boston area. The observatory is so high up that you can see the curve of the earth.

Ethnic eateries, quaint pubs, including the one called Cheers that inspired a mid-1980s TV show, and the obligatory Starbucks are also part of the local dining scene. Dine on coconut chicken at Thai Basil one night and peruse the wine-list and fresh-fish menu at Skipjack’s the next. You can always take a stroll down to the frozen Frog Pond and wrap your hands around a steaming cup of brew while making up your mind.

Boston Common is a lively hub of activity for both city dwellers and visitors. This beautiful 5-acre park has a rich history. Many famous speakers and historic events are associated with this area of Boston, including its designation as the starting point of the Freedom Trail. Every year, around the beginning of December, the park goes through a magical metamorphosis as thousands of tiny lights come to life with the annual Christmas tree lighting.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the annual event. On Thursday, December 1, 2011, St. Nick and Mayor Menino will share the joy of flipping the switches to light the trees of Boston. Thousands of people are expected to join in the festivities. The tree lighting ceremony begins around 6:00PM and the lights will be illuminated just before 8:00PM.

This year there will be a spectacular skating program at Frog Pond in Boston Common. Pairs, couple dancing routines and other programs will delight and entertain young and old. The two-hour show will feature local skaters and national champions. The event is scheduled to begin at 5:00PM.

Planning the annual tree lighting is a yearlong process. For the past forty years, the trees that have adorned Boston Common have come from Nova Scotia. This year’s tree will arrive on November 18th and take its place in history. As the truck delivering the tree makes its way to Boston Common, it will wind through the city. Occupants living along the path will be able to watch the tree as it travels past luxury Boston condos, down Cambridge and Boylston Street, and finally past One Charles Street, before it turns onto Tremont for the final leg of the long journey.

The tree will stand at 139 Tremont Street, near the Boston Visitor Center. Local schoolchildren will be on location to watch the tree arrive and visit with Santa. Residents living at Tremont on the Common, have a bird’s eye view of all the activities from their luxury condos.

Boston is a beautiful city filled with history and romance around every turn. The magical transformation of the city during the holiday season must be experienced up close. If you are visiting the area as part of a Boston relocation package, consider renting a handsome cab for the afternoon and evening before the ceremony.

Touring the city, meandering through the Back Bay condo districts and exploring the North End waterfront communities on Battery Wharf from a carriage lets you hear and feel the essence of the city. It will give you a chance to see some of the most luxurious and exquisitely designed properties available in Boston. If you are near Battery Wharf during lunchtime, you can enjoy a gourmet lunch at one of the fine dining establishments.

If you are looking for a luxury apartment Boston style, working with a Boston real estate agent is recommended. Luxury apartments and condos are scattered throughout the city and surrounding neighborhoods. Tell your Warren Residential real estate agent about the properties and neighborhoods you liked most. Real estate agents have the inside scoop about new properties under construction and recent renovations in the inner city, too. It is impossible to see everything in a day or two on your own, working with a professional will help narrow down your search.

The lighting of Boston Common is a magical experience, steeped in tradition. This time of year is filled with wonder, hope, joy and anticipation.

Join us for an evening of family fun, Boston style. For more information call 617-635-4505 or visit www.massconvention.com/bcg.html for parking information.

As one of the most prominent cities during the years that shaped the country that became America, Boston, Massachusetts is rich in history. From Paul Revere’s famous ride to the infamous Boston Massacre, the city saw more than its share of historical moments that changed the course of history and the fate of the fledgling country that became the United States of America. Just as the city itself blends history with the modern world, so does the city’s real estate. Boston real estate is unique in that it allows you to find a downtown Boston apartment that offers both the charm of days gone by and the amenities of the future. Boston luxury real estate offers the finest in Boston condominiums and lofts. Whether you plan to visit Boston in November, or are planning a Boston relocation during the Thanksgiving holiday, a tour of some of the more famous Boston sites is a must.

Thanksgiving in Boston is a beautiful time of year. Although snow is possible at Thanksgiving, you are more likely to encounter cool days and cooler nights. A daytime walk along the Freedom Trail will allow you the opportunity to take a step back in time while strolling through downtown Boston. The 2.5 mile trail takes you past many of Boston’s more well known historical sites such as the Boston Latin School. Founded in 1635, the school is not only the country’s first public school, but the oldest school in America. Both the Bunker Hill Monument and the statue of Benjamin Franklin can also be found along the trail. The Freedom Trail also passes by the site of the Boston Massacre which took place in 1770. The incident resulted in the death of five men at the hands of British Soldiers and is seen as one of the important seeds that eventually led to the American Revolution. The Revolutionary War, in turn, cost thousands of men their lives. The trail includes three important historical burying grounds where many Revolutionary War victims were laid to rest. Granary Burying Grounds, for example, is home to three signers of the United States Constitution along with Paul Revere and all five of the victims of the Boston Massacre.

Along with the Freedom Trail, the Boston National Historical Park offers a glimpse into many of the events that led to the American Revolutionary War. The U.S. navy, as part of the Historical Park program, offers tours through the U.S.S. Constitution. The Constitution, named for the U.S. Constitution by president George Washington, is the oldest commissioned naval vessel still capable of floating. Commissioned in 1797, the vessel was built in Boston and was part of the newly formed United States Navy. Both guided and self-guided tours are available along both the Freedom Trail and through the Historical Park.

Boston is not only a historically significant city, but a modern city with a wealth of real estate options for the discerning renter or investor. Whether you are looking for a Boston waterfront condo, a back bay condo, or prefer the elegance of South Boston apartments, Boston, Massachusetts has what you are looking for in luxury living.

On October 5, more than 200 of Boston’s movers and shakers gathered for the formal announcement of the North Point development project’s relaunch. The project has been stalled since 2007 for legal and financial reasons. Among the speakers at the event was former Los Angeles Lakers basketball legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson, whose firm, Canyon/Johnson Urban Funds, is a major investor in the project.

The project is a major undertaking. It covers a 44 acre plot of land between Cambridge, Charlestown, and Downtown Boston. The North Point development has been referred to as a ‘mini city’ and will eventually include offices, shopping, dining, and thousands of new homes. The project will essentially create an entirely new town square area at the northeast side of Cambridge.

To add to the ambition and complexity of the project, it also involves an extension of the MBTA Green Line. The Lechmere station will be rebuilt in a new location next to the North Point site. The updated $70 million station will be a key part of the entire project. Residents, workers, and employees in the area will have quick access to one of Boston’s central mass transit arteries.

Groundbreaking could happen as early as next Summer, will create about 250 jobs. Thousands more jobs are expected as the project gains momentum over the next few years. The North Point development project will eventually be another great destination in the Cambridge area.

Labor Day marks the end of summer for many people. Escape your Boston apartment and the huge influx of college students this holiday weekend with a day trip to one of the many nearby beaches. It’s sometimes hard to imagine that there are beautiful New England beaches within an hour’s drive outside of Boston. If you’ve never had the opportunity to visit any of these beaches here are a few suggestions:

Singing Beach – Manchester, MA

When most people are asked what their favorite beach near Boston is they’ll usually tell you it’s
Singing Beach. It’s no mystery why it’s such a popular spot – beautiful area, nice facilities, and close to public transportation. Although parking is expensive (usually $25) it’s only about a 15 minute walk from the commuter rail. Not many places can compare with Singing Beach’s convenience and beauty, which is probably why it can get a bit crowded on weekends! Hop on the train at North Station and head to Manchester by the Sea to experience this gorgeous beach this Labor Day weekend.

Wingaersheek Beach – Gloucester, MA

Not too far from Singing Beach is another popular Massachusetts beach known as Wingaersheek. If you’re looking for big waves this is probably not the best beach to visit. However, it’s great for kids because the many sandbars allow you to wade out pretty far. Parking at Wingaersheek is cheaper than in Manchester (only $15) and is a great beach to spend with the family as there are plenty of sand dunes, tidal pools, shells, etc. for kids to enjoy.

Horseneck Beach – Westport, MA

If you’re looking for a nice beach on the South Shore, Horseneck Beach may be the spot for you! Only $7 for parking, this beach is a great place if you’re looking for some wave action. While the beach is a bit rocky, the water is quite warm (coming from a New Englander). The beach stretches for about 2 miles and allows plenty of room to spread out even on a busy summer day.

There aren’t very many more days for you to lay out on one of these gorgeous beaches – take advantage of them this Labor Day weekend! If you can’t make it to the beach this weekend because you’re one of the many people moving to the city this weekend contact a Warren Residential agent to assist with your real estate needs!

Howl at the Moon Labor Day Luau
Sunday, Sep 4, 7:00 pm to Monday, Sep 5, 2:00 am

Howl at the Moon is one of Boston’s coolest bars. Located in the Financial district, Howl at the Moon features dueling concert pianos and amazing live music. They call themselves “part bar, part concert,” as the music is the center of attention, and wow does it capture attention! Howl at the Moon will be throwing an extra awesome Labor Day party with great music and drink specials!

Gloucester Schooner Festival
Sep 2-5

Taking place in the USA’s oldest seaport, the 27th annual Gloucester Schooner Festival will feature over 50 ships engaging in racing for two days. The Festival also includes many celebrations and events, and is a growing attraction every year.

Deutsche Bank Championship
Sep 2-5

The next stop in the PGA tour will be at the TPC Boston course in Norton, MA on Labor Day Weekend! Tickets are still available! If you like the sport, there is no better way to spend labor day weekend and the final days of summer weather than enjoying the outdoors and world class golf.

Back Bay Labor Day Walking Tour
Monday, Sep 5, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm starting at The Massachusetts State House

Boston is a very different city today than it was just after the Civil War era. The cities land mass has increased by hundreds of percent. If you didn’t know, Back Bay used to literally be a Bay before it was filled in in a massive multi-decade long public works project. Why not spend your labor day morning and early afternoon walking around beautiful parts of Boston and learning about the city’s rich history and famous characters from the past.

Berklee Jazz on Spectacle Island
Sunday, Sep 4, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Head out to beautiful Spectacle Island to listen to Jazz played by The Berklee School of Music’s Cettina Donato Quartet. For those looking for a relaxed Labor Day but would still like to get out and do something, this is the perfect event. The event itself is free but taking a ferry to the island is not.

Still want to party in your home or apartment? Maybe you need a different one to throw a better Labor Day party? If you are interested in speaking with a real estate agent about buying or renting in the Boston area, contact Warren Residential Group today!

Origins

Ever wonder where Boston’s Back Bay got its name? It wasn’t always a bustling cultural and commercial center with historic brownstones, posh lofts, and beautiful waterfront condominiums. This neighborhood of Boston, which includes some of the city’s most important buildings and landmarks, used to be a large bay stretching all the way from the Boston Common to Kenmore square. By the early 1800s, Boston had already saturated its available and surrounding space, and only a narrow isthmus connected central downtown to the rest of the greater metropolitan area. In 1857, after a failed attempt to circumvent the city’s traffic problems with a dam/toll road, the city of Boston began a project to “make land.”

35-car-long trains filled with rocks, dirt, and other fill arrived in Back Bay 16 times a day for 43 years, finishing what is now Back Bay Fens or “The Fens” in 1900. Most buildings’ basements along Commonwealth Avenue and the other streets of the Back Bay were never dug; they simply were left as holes with more dirt and gravel piled around them. The layout of Back Bay was devised by Arthur Gilman of the Gridley James Fox Bryant firm. Much inspiration was taken from parts of Paris. Gilman wanted wide, parallel, tree-lined airy streets, such as Commonwealth Avenue or Beacon Street.

Back Bay Today

The modern day Back Bay, which is an officially recognized neighborhood of Boston, still features rows of beautiful Victorian Brownstones that trace their origins to the monumental project that created the land they live on. These historic brick walls now stand alongside global landmarks such as the Prudential Center, Hynes Convention Center, and Boston’s famous center for fun, nightlife, dining and high fashion: Newbury Street. Few blocks in Back Bay lack an architecturally or historically significant building. Once completely submerged, Back Bay is now a bustling part of downtown Boston brimming with culture, history, and endless entertainment.
