Back Bay
With its beautiful brownstones and tree-lined streets, it is no wonder Boston’s Back Bay has always been one of America’s most desirable neighborhoods in which to live. Back Bay is home to world-famous Newbury Street, called by many the Rodeo Drive of Boston. Filled with boutique and major-label shops, Newbury Street is a great place to spot a celebrity or local sport star while window shopping.
Back Bay is also home the two tallest buildings in Boston: the Prudential Center and the John Hancock Building. When walking along the Back Bay section of Boylston Street, make sure to stop in at Abe and Louis’s to dine on one of Boston’s best steaks!
What many people do not realize is that as little as 160 years ago Back Bay did not exist but was actually swamp and marshland. Thus, it is now called Back Bay because it used to be part of the Charles River! To form the land, the Massachusetts legislature commissioned local construction corporations to dam the river and fill in the area, a project that took almost 80 years from start to finish.
