About West End

Boston's West End neighborhood was once the most densely populated area of the city.

From the mid-1800s to the mid-20thcentury, the neighborhood was considered a “slum” by the wealthy, and in the 1950s, the original neighborhood (which was more residential than today's) was completely leveled to make way for “urban renewal.”

Today, the redeveloped West End is dominated by high-rises and Massachusetts General Hospital. The area is also served by North Station, a major transportation hub for Amtrak, Commuter Rail and two subway lines.
