About Boston's Leather District

The Leather District is a small neighborhood of Boston near South Street, located between the Financial District and Chinatown. It gets its name from the dominance of the leather industry in the late 19th century.

The area was at first developed as a residential area, but became the center of the city's leather industry after the Great Boston Fire of 1872, which devastated the city's business district.

Boston’s Leather District is the most homogeneous 19th-century commercial district in the city, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

Since the 1980s, the Leather District has grown as a mixed-use area, and it is now home to a variety of commercial and residential tenants.

Occasionally referred to as the "LD", this neighborhood has a lot of charm for its size. The area features a mix of restaurants, ranging from a dearly beloved 24-hour diner to more upmarket places that serve a range of international cuisines. Artisanal coffee shops and trendy bars cater to the residents, downtown workers and to the South Station rail commuters.

The Leather District’s proximity to South Station makes it easy to get around the city, and to go further afield - a factor also helped by the LD’s proximity to the Boston Greyhound Station and Logan International Airport.

Leather District, Boston Real Estate

Being in Boston’s Leather District feels more like being in New York City's SoHo neighborhood.

The 19th-century brick warehouses now hold luxury lofts, located between the Financial District and Chinatown. Mere steps away from boutique shops and cafés and with South Station right next door, the Leather District can be the perfect place to live.

The neighborhood’s impressive brick-and-beam lofts truly are hidden gems in the heart of downtown Boston - and these luxury lofts for sale can be yours with the help of Warren Residential.

Things To Do In The Leather District

Residents of Boston’s Leather District get to enjoy all the perks of living in Downtown Boston.

Between the Financial and Leather Districts, they share some of Boston’s most popular bars and restaurants. Those who live in the LD know that no night out is complete without a trip to the South Street Diner.

This super-friendly, retro 24-hour diner turns out all-night breakfasts, burgers & shakes. It’s known for attracting many after-hours customers, with its busiest hours being anywhere between 1 and 4am - when night owls rush in for some Boston Cream Pancakes!

The Leather District’s proximity to Chinatown provides residents with ample opportunity to sample the area’s many amazing eateries - or even take the highly rated Chinatown Culture & Cuisine Tour.

A lot of Downtown Boston’s best features are within walking distance from the LD, and any that aren’t are easily accessible thanks to the area's great public transport links. No matter what you want to do, you can do it in Boston - and living in the Leather District means you can do it whenever you please.
